WebDec 2, 2011 · If you ping an IP address that nothing is configured for, your machine tells you that the destination is not reachable because no device (routers, etc) has a mapping to that IP address. If you had a host that was alive on that address and there is still cache that is remembering that mapping then you will get a request timed out. Test this.
