GUIDE TO DOWNSIZING
Leaving the family home can be a daunting move and we want to be here to help. Whatever your reason for investing in a smaller home, we’ve compiled a list of tips that we think will ease your moving/downsizing experience.
- Figure out the layout of your new home and sort your belongings accordingly. This first step will help you objectively organize what you need and what you will not have room for. This step is also best helped with having a critical opinion around; somebody who can say “You hardly ever use that!” to really shed some light and give you a motivational kick in the right packing direction.
- Depending on how much notice you have, the earlier you can start organizing your belongings, the better.Even getting an idea of everything you need to get rid of a couple months beforehand will help give an objective perspective while packing..
- Stop being so sentimental.Obviously there are going to be a lot of memories in your previous home, however, only keep the mementos of the milestone occasions. You will be quickly surprised by how much room you will create for yourself by following through this step. It may also be easier to start packing rooms that carry little to no sentimental value, such as the kitchen, and clear through these first.
- Don’t be scared – everything’s going to work out great.Don’t stress over the small stuff that you are on the fence about bringing. Take a deep breath and a step back to critically say “Yes, I need this,” or “No, I really won’t need this.”
You are about to embark on one of the most enjoyable journeys of your life. Your parenting job has been completed, paid-out and filed in the archive. This move is your fresh start for the rest of your life – a chance to start taking care of yourself and enjoying every single moment. Everything’s going to be fine, so don’t sweat the small stuff, and get ready for the time of your life!
